Virtual Reality and Language Courses

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. By simulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world. The only limits to near-real VR experiences are the availability of content and cheap computing power.

Virtual Reality can also be a great tool for teachers and learners. In our class we had the chance to try out VR with headsets. After the experience it can easily be said that VR can provide classes with authentic material for learners.

For example VR has great performance in vocabulary teaching. It can provide the environment and the new words about that environment for the students as simulated. This way learning vocabulary would become easy and way more fun for especially young learners. Even though the equipments can be expensive, students can still use cheaper ones as an alternative. Finally, VR is for sure a great and fun way to teach and learn and it will be way more popular in the future.
